Explore a Culture, Expand Your World

I found this TEDx talk from Valarie Hoeks about the intricacies and beauties of Chinese culture to be really insightful. In particular, she mentions the importance of learning a language, building relationships, and understanding historical worldviews in order to better understand a culture.

I spent over a year learning a new language and have found it to be invaluable in understanding how people in a different context think, as well as act. Book a flight to a new country and leave English behind. Make some friends over coffee or tea. Visit religious sites and cemeteries. See how it helps you in your international business.

Research, Research, Research

“You’ll never get where you’re going unless you first know the way.”

– Confucius, or was it Grandpa?

Either way, that’s some old-school wisdom, blended with a little eastern thought. This article from the Huffington Post sheds some great light on how and where start-ups are successful globally. Looking forward to following some of these trends (and hopefully breaking a few of them!) in the years to come…
